It's wrong and it fucking needs to STOP. Non-violently if possible, by force if necessary, but the oppression of transpeople and their supporters... it needs to end NOW.

Remember: transwomen displaced to shelters during Katrina were actually arrested for using the women's shower and restroom facilities. The only reason charges were dropped was because of a media blitz; transwomen are routinely arrested - and occasionally even charged under sexcrime laws, and incarcerated in men's prisons - for something as simple as using a public restroom. This is even worse than the way blacks were treated in the days of segregated restrooms - at least they HAD 'coloured' restroom facilities available, and using a 'white' restroom was not charged as a sex crime.

I wasn't - in fact, a Superdome survivor (a woman) stood guard for me while I used the restrooms. There was solidarity in that particular shelter. There was no man, woman or transperson, no black or white... just people, all freshly escaped from Hell on Earth.

In other shelters, however, that was the case, and that was bullshit too.

Glad to hear that you were in a trans-friendly shelter. The problem is that the LAW is on the side of the anti-trans hate-crimes (sorry - can't even call them crimes, because they're perfectly legal forms of abuse)...
